Porsche 944 Remanufactured Power Steering Rack

Replacing the rack was a messy, tedious, frustrating ordeal-from-hell. Working upside down in a confined space with grit and sand falling into my eyes, grease everywhere, fluid dripping down, etc. But I did get it done!

There's a good description of how to replace the rack here:

Here's what I can add:

Before starting, buy a can or two of engine degreaser. Spray the left side of the engine (that part that slants out at an angle). Wait, then pour some hot water over it. Repeat as necessary.

Cleaning this area as much as possible will prevent you from getting greasy up to your elbows.

Also, try to get as much of the sand and grit off the top crossmember. This will be falling in your eyes and hair as you work.

Removing the universal joint from the steering rack was the hardest part of the job. I finally got it free by shoving a big flathead screwdriver into the notch and whacking it until the steering rack fell free.

Well, the rack will not actually fall free. It will be dangling by the return hose. You can use a 6mm allen-wrench to remove it, or a pair of vice-grips.

Costs:

  • 'Rebuilt' (used) steering rack, $220 shipped (eBay)
  • Rubber Boots $10
  • Power Steering reservoir $27
  • Tie Rods $130
  • Copper washers $13 (Porsche Dealer)
  • Tie-rod puller $7.99 (Harbor Freight)
  • Giant adjustable wrench $20 (Auto Barn)
  • Alignment $175

Total $428 parts/tools + $175 alignment = $603!

Post-installation, I've had to tighten up the universal joint bolt as there was some play where it attaches to the rack. But no leaks!
